Equine Donation Information

Thank you for helping your horse find a safe home for the remainder of his life.  We understand this is an emotional decision for many of you, but a necessary one as well.

Miller’s Equestrian Center & Sanctuary (Miller’s) is a 501c 3 non-profit organization that provides programs for children that teach important life lessons through interaction, training, riding and caring for horses.

Miller’s is also a rescue facility. We work to provide a home and purpose for unwanted horses. The organization will take injured, abused, old and unruly horses.  If this is most likely the final destination for your horse we ask that you help us help your horse by giving us a donation of $300.00 with your horse.

Miller’s horses will never see a slaughterhouse. The organization maintains a first right of refusal on all placed, sale and adopted horses. Each horse will be monitored every six months and can be returned to Miller’s when they are no longer good for re-sale. Our goal is to keep each horse physically and mentally sharp so they live with purpose and a long, happy life.

Miller’s will take horses under any circumstances. Each horse will be evaluated, examined and set in either a rehabilitation or management program to determine the horse’s purpose.

Miller’s donations are 100% tax deductible. Horse(s) donated to our program, and any cost associated with transferring the horse to us (temporary fostering while waiting for transport, transport, coggins, etc.), can be deducted for the fair market value of the horse. A thank you letter will be sent, along with a signed copy of Donor Questionnaire/ Equine Donation Contract. This document will show the value of the donation and serve as a receipt.

Horses with a fair market value of $5000 or higher must be appraised by a current member of the American City of Equine Appraisers, and a copy of the appraisal must accompany the donation contract (www.equineappraiser.com). This is an IRS rule, not ours. Please retain a copy of any appraisal for tax purposes.

Miller’s horses will receive lay-up (if required), turnout, supplements, veterinary, dental and farrier care as necessary, rugs in winter, regular clipping, bathing, daily handling and schooling if necessary. When adopted, we require the adopter to sign an adoption agreement stating that they will take proper care of the equine to maintain a healthy, happy horse.

Donated horses can be visited by their owners while at Miller’s between 3-5 M-F or 10-12 S-S at 1084 Hidden Springs Road, San Luis Obispo, CA, 96401.

Individual and corporate donations, fundraisers and grants primarily fund Miller’s. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent. These gifts are vital to maintain healthy horses and provide our program benefits to the children our organization serves. Please consider donating to our programs for their continued success. We would be happy to send further information upon request. Donations can be made out and sent to:

Miller’s Equestrian Center & Sanctuary, PO Box 14254, San Luis Obispo, CA, 96406. Please call (805) 235-3834 for further information or with any questions. Thank you.
